BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Officials at the Baton Rouge Zoo gave a sneak peak of its newly-arrived star Thursday morning.
It was the first time the zoo's brand new baby black rhino was shown in person to the media. The little girl is sort of a celebrity.
She's the first black rhino born in captivity in North America in the last 12 months and only the third worldwide in that same time frame. She's also the only one ever in Louisiana.
"It was a long waited, expected birth," Sam Winslow with Baton Rouge Zoo said. "It took 16 months, a little over 16 months, to wait for this baby to arrive and it's finally here and we're happy that mom and baby are doing well. They're settling into their new exhibit, so it's a great exhibit for people to come out and see."
The little rhino's father is from a zoo in Tyler, Texas and the mom is from San Diego.
The baby rhino does not yet have a name, but be thinking of something because the zoo just may ask for the public's help.
