Baton Rouge Rhino Baby Named

BATON ROUGE, La. — The Baton Rouge Zoo announced its newest baby black rhino has finally been given an official name. She will be called Zuri, which means "beautiful," in Swahili.

Catherine North won the contest to name the baby.

Zoo officials say the name was selected over Lela, meaning "black beauty" in Swahili, and Makena, meaning "happy one" in Kikuyu. Lela was submitted by Dylan Walker, while Makena was submitted by Mary Clare Welshons.

To celebrate the naming, the three finalists and their families were invited to attend Santa Safari at the Zoo on Saturday. The winner was announced at the event and treated to a behind-the-scenes tour to meet baby Zuri.
