Free Admission to See New Addition at Mesker

EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) - There is a new arrival at Mesker Park Zoo.

The new Indian Rhinoceros named Mechi has been at the zoo since November 11, but she is just now making her public debut.

She replaces another Indian rhino named Jordie who died last year.

"Indian rhinos are only represented in 11 zoos in North America and there are only 54 in the species survival program, so we're pretty excited about having her here," animal curator Brad Fichter said. "It's pretty exciting, and the fact that she's here really means something to Mesker Park Zoo."

Mechi's home is in the Kley Building until the weather warms up, and then she'll be on exhibit outdoors.

You can see the new Indian rhino on free admission day.

Mesker Park Zoo will be free of charge this Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The zoo is trying to break an all-time attendance record this year.

The goal is to reach 200,000 visitors by December 31.  They still need 3,041 visitors to help them achieve their goal.
